Lung Pathway Board

The NCA Lung Cancer Pathway Board provides a collaborative forum for strategic focus and vision for lung cancer services throughout the North of Scotland Health Boards.

Lung cancer services in the North of Scotland

Lung is the most common cancer in Scotland; in 2020, there were 1032 new patients diagnosed in the North of Scotland.

There are two different types of lung cancer:

  • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)
  • Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

Investigation and treatment of suspected lung cancer is undertaken at our three North cancer centres in Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness. Lung cancer surgery is undertaken at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary or by referral to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary or the Golden Jubilee national hospital in Glasgow.

Many patients in the North of Scotland present with late stage lung cancer; earlier detection and prevention of lung cancer is important for improving survival.

The aim of this Pathway Board is to facilitate regional working between the centres, ensuring a focus on improving patient outcomes.
