Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy (PERT) in Pancreatic Cancer

The pancreas produces enzymes to digest fat, carbohydrates and protein. When the pancreas does not function as it should, the body cannot digest these nutrients, often referred to as malabsorption. When malabsorption occurs, nutrients are passed out in your stools which means you are not getting the goodness from the food you are eating.

Common symptoms of malabsorption are:

·       Greasy, loose, pale coloured stools

·       Increased frequency of stools

·       Abdominal pain

·       Excessive wind and belching

These symptoms can be unpleasant and can lead to weight loss and vitamin deficiencies. If you are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer you should be offered PERT. Some people with pancreatic cancer may not have any of the symptoms of malabsorption.  PERT is still recommended as there is strong evidence which shows that PERT can improve your quality of life, symptoms and life expectancy.

Other people may require PERT for different reasons including upper gastrointestinal surgery and pancreatitis. If you are unsure why you require PERT, or if you think you would benefit from PERT, please discuss with your dietitian, medical team or specialist nurse.

The most commonly prescribed PERT is Creon® however other brands such as Pancrease HL, Nutrizym 22 or Pancrex V may be prescribed.  PERT is normally prescribed in capsule form but is available in powder form for those unable to take capsules. PERT is taken with all meals, snacks and some drinks. You will be given written information regarding your PERT dosage which will be dependent on your food intake, portion sizes and symptoms.

All pancreatic enzymes are made from pork products. Organisations representing Jewish and Muslim communities and the Vegan Society have said PERT is acceptable to use as there is no alternative.
